Equifax settlements

Equifax, one of the three national credit bureaus, has settled two cases we track, and one of them is still open. The 2017 data breach settlement is the better known: up to $700 million for a breach that exposed the personal information of about 147 million Americans, where cash payments were cut to a small fraction of the advertised $125 because so many people filed. That one closed in January 2024. The separate credit-file settlement is about duplicate collection accounts on credit reports rather than a breach, pays up to $600 with no proof required, and accepts claims until September 1, 2026.
