Meta, the company formerly named Facebook, has settled two large privacy cases we track, and people frequently confuse them. The $725 million settlement covered nearly every US Facebook user and grew out of the Cambridge Analytica data-sharing scandal; the first round of payments averaged about $29.43 and depended on how long the account had been active. The $650 million settlement was narrower and paid far more per person — about $397 each — because it was brought under Illinois's biometric privacy law over face-tagging photos, and only Illinois residents qualified. Both are closed.
