Last updated: October 12, 2026
New York City's Central Booking settlement offers eligible detainees up to $475 for each qualifying detention. Submit a claim online or mail it postmarked by October 19, 2026. The settlement covers Brooklyn Central Booking from April 8, 2017 through December 27, 2019, and all five NYC Central Booking facilities from February 3, 2020 through March 1, 2023.
The City agreed to pay up to $21.5 million to class members to resolve allegations about unconstitutional detention conditions. It denies wrongdoing. Payments may be reduced proportionally and by applicable liens; $475 is a maximum, not a guaranteed payment. Filing a claim is required.

- The later period covers the Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island Central Booking facilities. This settlement does not cover every detention facility or every arrest in New York.

Frequently asked questions
Who qualifies for the NYC Central Booking settlement?
The settlement covers people detained at Brooklyn Central Booking from April 8, 2017 through December 27, 2019, or at any of the five NYC Central Booking facilities from February 3, 2020 through March 1, 2023. The facility and dates matter; an arrest elsewhere or outside those periods does not by itself qualify.
How much will the Central Booking settlement pay?
A valid claimant may receive up to $475 per qualifying detention. If the total qualifying detentions claimed exceeds 45,263, payments are reduced proportionally. Applicable liens can also reduce the amount received. The City pays up to $21.5 million to class members, with attorneys' fees, administration and representative awards funded separately.
What is the Central Booking settlement deadline?
File online or mail your claim postmarked by October 19, 2026. You must submit a valid claim to receive payment; class membership alone does not trigger an automatic payment.
Can liens reduce my settlement payment?
Yes. The agreement permits specified child-support, parking, Environmental Control Board and Medicare liens, as well as applicable court remedies obtained by the New York State Office of Victim Services. The $120-per-qualifying-arrest limit applies to parking and Environmental Control Board recoveries, not all deductions. Contact the administrator or class counsel about your individual situation.
What information does the claim form require?
The current paper form asks for payment information, printed name, Social Security number, signature and date, and includes a Notice ID field. You must personally certify the information. The notice directs people who prefer to submit their Social Security number through an encrypted process to the official online claim form. If you lack notice credentials, the online entry offers a No option to open the form; eligibility is still subject to verification.
What if my detention count is wrong?
Contact the official settlement administrator to confirm the number of qualifying detentions in its records and raise any discrepancy. Do this promptly rather than assuming the maximum payment or a particular detention count.
When will Central Booking settlement payments arrive?
No fixed payment date is promised. The court has scheduled the final approval hearing for October 22, 2026. Payments depend on approval, any appeals and the agreement becoming effective. Check the official website for updates.
