City of New York has another settlement — see all City of New York settlements.
The City of New York agreed to a $140 million settlement over the process for suspending taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers’ licenses after an arrest. The federal court granted final approval on June 30, 2026. The administrator’s September update says it is processing claims and will accept them until December 28, 2026.
Payments depend on TLC suspension records, whether a driver previously requested an individual damages hearing, the number of valid claims, expenses and applicable deductions. Eligible drivers must submit a signed claim and make the two required statements about what would have happened at an adequate hearing.

Frequently asked questions
How are initial payments calculated?
The published initial caps before deductions are $700 for up to 25 days, $750 for 26–31, $21,000 for 32–60, $24,000 for 61–90, $27,000 for 91–120, $30,000 for 121–210, $33,000 for 211–390, and $36,000 for 391 or more days. The cap for a suspension with no end date is $17,000. For drivers who did not request an individual damages hearing, the formula uses 37.5% of the amount otherwise distributed for the applicable category. Actual payments may be higher or lower, depending on valid claims and the available net fund.
What if I had more than one suspension?
TLC’s records determine suspension length. When combining multiple suspensions during the class period, a suspension lasting fewer than 32 calendar days is excluded from the cumulative total. A single short suspension can still fall in its own payment tier.
Can deductions or another distribution change what I get?
Legally required deductions may include overdue child support, docketed NYC parking judgments and deductions under New York Executive Law § 632-a. If more than $250,000 remains after the first distribution, 60% of the unclaimed amount, up to $22.5 million, may be redistributed pro rata to timely claimants. Each additional payment is capped at 35% of that person’s original award.
What about drivers selected for the 2023 trial?
The FAQ says the ten drivers who participated and won verdicts may elect to forgo their verdict amounts for an incentive payment of $15,000 each, subject to court approval. The ten selected drivers who did not participate were limited to nominal damages. Anyone in this group should check their notice or ask class counsel how the settlement applies to them.
